Chapter Eighteen

Both Angie’s medallion and Sebastian’s instincts led them off the highway, down a side road moving deeper into the high desert. A few turns, a dirt road, and a dead end, and Sebastian’s instincts were still tugging him onward. Her little medallion’s vibrations increased as they parked the car and got out.

“Out into the middle of the desert, then?” she asked Sebastian and her medallion at the same time. She glanced overhead. The sun was low in the sky, the day still lingeringly warm, but this time of year, once the sun set, the desert got cold. She didn’t have a jacket with her. And she only had two plastic bottles of water in her purse.

Not great for a desert hike.

“’Fraid so,” Sebastian said. He looked around. “No other cars. Either used an offroad, or hiked in from a different direction.”

“Carmen’s car was not an offroad.” Not that that meant much. But Angie had been expecting to see the little red sportscar here somewhere. What did it mean that it wasn’t around? Had they simply come in from a different direction? Or was it something more nefarious.

Sebastian lifted his chin toward the medallion still resting in her open palm. “It’s still leading you this way?”

“Still leading me in the same direction. Whatever is calling you is also where Carmen is.”

“Then we keep going.” He narrowed his eyes at her. “You’re still not feeling the call, are you?”

She shook her head. Even after months, even in a new setting, nothing had changed.

She wasn’t meant to be a demon hunter.

“We’ll worry about that after,” he said.

After. Definitely a worry for after. But the high desert at night, without a jacket, with very little water, with a demon about to break loose, and a woman with mysterious plans and nefarious plots possibly in trouble—or leading them into a trap…

Yeah, none of this was good. And Angie was more than a little worried there wouldn’t be an after.

Not the first time they’d faced the unknown and run into a demon fight together. Not even the first time she’d followed Sebastian to a fight here near her hometown. Still. This time felt different. Scarier. And she couldn’t pinpoint why.

Maybe because she knew, deep down, this wasn’t an ordinary hunt.

Sebastian rounded the car and lifted her chin until she was looking him right in the eyes. “I’ve got you,” he said. “We’ve got this. I won’t let anyone hurt you.”

“Same,” she said. “But I’m going in as a witch. Not a demon hunter. This time… This time, I can’t pretend. I have to go in as me.”

He brushed his thumb over her jaw. “Then we’ll definitely be okay.”

The compliment surprised a little smile from her, which made him smile in return. He brushed her lips with a soft kiss, gentle enough to make her sigh. Then they faced the desert, and the pull toward danger.

As they walked, the little medallion started to shiver in her palm, and to her surprise, it rose up over her
